What do you get when you make a 19th century novel into a play within a movie complicated with subplots populated by aristocrats with unpronounceable names and curious scenes such as the choreography of paper filing civil servants worthy of a dinner theater?

Pretty much a mess for two hours and nine minutes.

Praise has come grudgingly to director Joe Wright from some critic for attempting something “new” and fresh.

At first, the conceit of making an old theater the world stage for the characters is interesting, but then it becomes confusing.
Is there a play going on?
Do the characters really work in the theater?
Is there really an apartment backstage belonging to Prince Stepan Arkadyevitch Oblonsky (“Stiva”) who is prone to having affairs?
Such confusion arises throughout this production.

If the theater setting is a technique, considered clever or intellectually stimulating, it is neither.
All that does is weigh heavily on an already ponderous plot.
Its only successful use is during the dreamlike quality of fireworks displays over the heads of ballroom dancers.

That said there are some reasons to see this film.
The camera lens loves Keira Knightley, who gives a more than passable performance of a woman who yields to her passion and then must deal with the guilt.
Speaking of passion, the love scenes have none, are heavy handed, discomforting.
Not sure seeing the pores on someone’s tongue is titillating.

But, when the actors are dressed, the costumes are beautiful.
The music isn’t bad either.
The cinematography has some high points but is generally less than stellar.

Several of the scenes will stay with you.
The ice covered train,
the horse race and disaster on stage,
the excesses of a lavish debutante ball and the sinister forbearance of
Jude Law (plays Anna’s husband, 20 years her senior)
who is willing to accept Anna’s infidelity for the sake of appearances.
